A general contractor takes on the whole job rather than one part of it: an extension, a kitchen or bathroom remodel, a basement conversion, or a repair after fire or flood. They schedule the trades, order materials, arrange inspections and are responsible for the result.
Ask for the license, the insurance certificate and two recent references you can actually ring. Ask who pulls the permits and books the inspections. Ask for the payment schedule in writing and be wary of a large deposit up front. Ask that changes be priced in writing before the work happens, because verbal change orders are where remodels go wrong.
