What we collect, and what we do not

If you are here to find a plumber, we do not know who you are and we never ask. There is no account, no sign-up and no lead form. You are not a lead, you are not for sale, and there is nothing to sell, because we never collect it.

How the site works

There is no account, and no form

Type a trade and a town. You get real businesses with real phone numbers, and you call whoever you like. We are not in the middle of it and we never pass your details to anybody, because we never ask for them.

Nobody buys their way to the top of the search

A business can pay for a placement near the top of a page, and it is marked when they have. Everything else is ordered by how well it matches what you asked for. A paid placement is a flat monthly price, never a fee for your call.

The corkboard is the local noticeboard

Trades post what they are doing this week, homeowners post what they need doing. It is free, it needs no account, and a like is just a show of hands.

Getting more out of it

Search the trade, not the company

“Roofer” plus your town finds far more than a half-remembered business name. If you are not sure which trade you need, try the job itself. “Leaking radiator” will get you there.

Try the next town over

Most trades happily travel twenty minutes, and a smaller town nearby often has someone who is free this week when everyone local is booked out.

Call two or three, not one

Prices for the same job vary more than most people expect. Ask each what is included, whether it covers materials, and whether the quote is fixed or an estimate.

Check the licence and the insurance yourself

We list businesses, we do not vouch for their work. Ask for a licence number and proof of insurance before anybody starts. A real trade will not mind being asked.

If your own business is listed, claim it

Claiming is free. You can correct the details, add what you actually do, and get a proper link back to your own website. If you would rather not be listed at all, say so and we will take it down.

What we collect if you are searching

Not your name, not your email address, not your phone number, and not your location.

When you press a phone number or a website link, we count that the link was pressed, and we note which business it was and roughly what kind of device asked. To stop one person being counted as fifty, we also store a short scrambled code that is thrown away and remade every day. It cannot be turned back into anything about you, and it is not a name for you.

We keep a record of what people search for and where, because that is how we know which trades are wanted in which towns and where to go looking for more businesses to list. It is not attached to a person.

If you list a business with us

An account holds what you put into it: your email address, a scrambled version of your password that cannot be read back, your business details, and any billing records. Your business details are published, because being published is the point of a listing.

We do not sell advertiser data, we do not rent it, and we do not hand your email address to other advertisers.

We do not sell your personal information

Not to data brokers, not to lead buyers, not to anyone, and not in the broader sense some state laws use, where sharing data for advertising counts as selling it. We take no commission on work anybody wins and we never charge for a lead, so no part of this business is served by selling you.

What we store on your device

Everything, including the few things kept in your browser's storage rather than in a cookie, because they amount to the same thing. Most visitors get only the first. Press any row to read what it is for.

  • NEXT_LOCALENecessaryCookieUntil you close your browser›

Remembers which language you are reading the site in.

  • st_entryAnalyticsCookieUntil you close your browser›

Notes which page you arrived on and the name of the site that sent you, so we can tell whether people find us through a search engine, a link, or by typing the address. No identifier, and nothing you typed.

  • st_boardFunctionalCookieOne year›

A random number, stored only if you press Like on the corkboard, so a like can be taken back and cannot be pressed fifty times. It is scrambled before it is stored and is never joined to anything else.

  • st_portalNecessaryCookie30 days›

Keeps you signed in, if you have a business account.

  • st_opsNecessaryCookie30 days›

Keeps a member of our team signed in.

  • st_banner_dismissedFunctionalLocal storage30 days›

Remembers that you closed the notice at the top of the front page, so it stays closed instead of coming back on every page.

  • st_couponFunctionalLocal storageUntil used or cleared›

Holds a discount code you arrived with, so it still applies when you reach the pricing page. Removed once it has been used.

There is no advertising cookie, no third-party tracking pixel and nothing that follows you to another website. Our visit counting uses no cookie at all.

You can block or delete any of these in your browser. Blocking them costs you nothing on the public site, because the directory, the search and every phone number keep working. It only stops you staying signed in, if you have an account.

Who else is involved

Running a website means some of it is handled by other companies. These are the kinds involved, and each is a supplier working for us. None of them is a buyer of anything.

  • Hosting and delivery. Serves the pages. It sees the ordinary details any web server sees, meaning your network address and which browser you are using, for as long as it takes to answer a request.
  • Data storage. Holds the directory itself and business accounts. There are no homeowner accounts to hold.
  • Email delivery. Sends the messages you asked for: a password reset, a receipt, a waitlist notice. Sees the address it is sending to.
  • Traffic measurement. Counts visits so we know which towns and trades people are looking for. It uses no cookie and builds no profile.

We would rather not publish a list of exactly which companies those are, for the same reason we do not publish the make of the lock on the front door. Write and ask and we will tell you.

Some pages carry links to shops that pay us a commission. Pressing one takes you to that shop, where their privacy policy and their cookies apply instead of ours. We send them nothing about you.

How long anything is kept

  • Counts of searches and link presses: kept while they are useful for telling businesses how their listing is doing. They contain nothing that identifies a person.
  • Business accounts: while the account exists. Ask us to close it and it goes.
  • Billing records: as long as tax rules require, which is longer than we would otherwise keep anything.
  • Waitlist email addresses: until you unsubscribe, which every message links to.

Your rights

Wherever you are, you can ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, and ask for it to be deleted. Write to [email protected] and say which. We will not charge you, and we will not treat you any differently for asking.

This is a directory of businesses in the United States and is not aimed at anyone outside it, but if you are reading from the UK or the EU the same rights apply and the same address reaches us.

Children

This site is for adults hiring tradespeople and for businesses advertising to them. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect anything from one.

Who we are, and changes

The SteelToe App, 609 E Powell Ave, Evansville, IN 47713, USA. Questions about any of this go to [email protected], and a person reads them.

If this notice changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes with it and anyone with an account is emailed. We will not quietly widen what we collect.

Terms of use

The SteelToe App is a directory, not a contractor and not a middleman. We publish businesses and their phone numbers. You call whoever you want, you hire whoever you want, and the agreement for the work is between you and them.

Who you are agreeing with

The SteelToe App, 609 E Powell Ave, Evansville, IN 47713, USA. Using the site means accepting what is in this section. If you do not, please do not use it.

We are not party to the work

We do not employ, supervise, endorse, licence-check or guarantee any business listed here. A listing is not a recommendation. A Verified badge means an advertiser has a paid placement and we have confirmed the business is real and reachable. It does not mean their work is good.

Check licences, insurance and references yourself before you let anybody into your home or pay them money. If a job goes wrong, that is between you and the business. We take no commission on the work and we are not in the middle of it, which also means we cannot settle it.

If you are searching

  • It is free, and there is no account to make.
  • Please do not scrape the directory, resell it, or use automated tools to pull it down in bulk. It took real work to build and it is not a free data feed.
  • Do not use the contact details here to send marketing to the businesses listed.

If your business is listed and you did not ask

Some listings were compiled from public sources, which is how a directory reaches enough coverage to be useful on the day it opens. Nothing is published beyond a business name, trade, town, phone number and website, which are the details a business already publishes about itself.

You can claim the listing and correct it for free, or ask for it to be removed entirely and we will take it down. No charge and no argument either way. Write to [email protected].

If you advertise with us

  • A placement is a flat monthly price agreed in advance. It is never a charge per lead, per call or per click, and a busy month never costs more than a quiet one.
  • We take no commission on work you win, and we do not sell your details to anyone.
  • You are responsible for what your listing says being true, for holding the licences and insurance your trade requires, and for the work itself.
  • You may cancel a placement at the end of a paid period. We do not refund a period already served unless we failed to run the placement.
  • We may remove a listing that is fraudulent, impersonates another business, advertises work the business is not licensed for, or is the subject of repeated credible complaints. Where we can, we ask first.

The corkboard

Anything you post is yours, and posting it gives us permission to display it on the site. Please do not post anything you do not have the right to post, anything false about a named business or person, or anything abusive. We can take a post down.

Availability

This is a small operation and it is still growing. We try hard to keep the site up and we have not always managed it. It is provided as it is, with no promise that it will be available at any particular moment.

Where a paid placement was not shown because the site was down, tell us and we will credit the time. That is a promise we can actually keep.

Limits

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from work done by a business you found here, from a listing being wrong, or from the site being unavailable. Where we are liable for something despite that, our liability is limited to what you have paid us in the twelve months before it happened, which for a homeowner is nothing, because searching is free.

Nothing here limits liability for fraud, or for anything else that cannot legally be limited.

Which law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Indiana, United States, and the courts there deal with any dispute about them.

Affiliate disclosure

Some links on this site go to shops that pay us a commission when you buy something. It costs you nothing extra. It has never affected, and will never affect, which businesses appear in the directory or the order they appear in.

The short version

  • Shopping links sit inside a box marked Paid ad, so you can tell before you press one.
  • The directory is separate. No shop can pay to change it, and no contractor's ranking is affected by it.
  • You never pay more for using our link than for going to the shop directly.
  • No affiliate programme is live yet. The links on this site currently go straight to the shop and earn us nothing.

Why we do this at all

Searching The SteelToe App is free and always will be, and listing a business on it is free too. We charge for a placement near the top of a page, and that is the whole business model. Never a fee per lead, per call or per click, and never a commission on the work a contractor wins.

That model is fair but it is slow, and the site costs money to run before it earns any. Commission on a drill or a kitchen sink is a way of paying for that which does not involve charging a homeowner, selling anybody's details, or putting a paid result somewhere it has not been earned. If it ever came into conflict with any of those three, it would be the affiliate links that went.

What we will and will not do

  • We will not let a shop influence which contractors are listed, which are verified, or where anyone ranks.
  • We will not put a shopping link on a contractor's listing page. A contractor paying for a placement should not have a shop competing for the same visitor on their own page.
  • We will not recommend something we would not recommend without the commission, or invent a review of a product we have not used.
  • We will mark every commissioned link, both on the page and in the code behind it, so a reader and a search engine can both tell.

How the links work

A shopping link goes through this site before it reaches the shop, so that we can count how many people pressed it. The count tells us which guides are worth writing. It records no more than the ordinary link counting described above, and nothing about you is sent to the shop.

Once you arrive, the shop sets its own cookies under its own name and its own privacy policy applies. That is how they know the visit came from us. We cannot see your basket, your account or what you buy. Only, eventually, that a sale happened.

Required wording

The SteelToe App takes part in retailer affiliate programmes and earns from qualifying purchases. Individual programmes may require their own wording, and where they do it appears alongside those links.

Asking about it

If anything on this site looks like it was bought and should not have been, write to [email protected]. That is a complaint worth making and we would want to know.
